Best Coffee Shops in San Diego for Studying

1. Lofty Coffee - Little Italy Cafe and Bakery

Little Italy → Directions

✏️ Great for working or studying, but half outdoor patio seating

What to order at Lofty: Oat milk latte (I recommend adding Salted Caramel), turkey and avocado croissant sandwich, and a harvest muffin

Latte in San Diego

The spacious outdoor patio, sleek design, and sizeable menu are what make Lofty one of the best San Diego coffee shops. If you’re staying anywhere near Little Italy, I recommend stopping by Lofty Coffee for breakfast before heading out on your San Diego adventures

Their numerous healthy food options are delicious and filling, and their coffee is hands down some of the very best coffee in San Diego. You’ll likely be getting breakfast with locals starting their work day here. The Little Italy shop is one of six locations, but it’s the one I recommend visiting.

2. Mnemonic

Bankers Hill (West of Balboa Park) → Directions

✏️ Small but great vibe for studying/working

What to order at Mnemonic: Maple Street Latte – maple syrup and cinnamon, good hot or iced

Mnemonic Coffee Shop San Diego

Small but mighty, Mnemonic is a staple neighborhood coffee house just outside of Balboa Park. The perfect place to grab an iced latte after or before a stroll through the famous San Diego Park, Mnemonic’s decor is very hip and chic.

It is a great place to study and work as the atmosphere is friendly and productive; however, the seating options are limited, and this coffee shop is popular (for good reason). They have a small pastry selection, but don’t count on eating much here; come for the best coffee in San Diego and the vibes instead.

3. Garden Coffee

Old Town → Directions

✏️ Outdoor patio, but spacious and cozy for studying or working

What to order at Garden Coffee: La Terraza latte (brown sugar cinnamon), or a drink flight, if available

Garden Coffee San Diego

Tucked away in Old Town San Diego, Garden Coffee is a hidden gem. Literally nearly hidden, this spot is a nature and coffee lovers’ haven. The outdoor patio is dog friendly, and a great place to spend the afternoon slowing down.

Grab a latte, stay a while to enjoy the vibe, and take a look at their plant selection. Their drink flights are perfect for trying a variety of coffees, but note that they are not always available.

4. The Template

Ocean Beach → Directions

✏️ Spacious and quiet for working or studying

What to order at The Template: “New York Walk” – nitro cold brew coffee, cinnamon, agave, and oat milk, or an Iced Honey Matcha

The Template Coffee Shop San Diego

The quirkiest of all the best San Diego coffee shops is The Template in the Ocean Beach neighborhood. With funky decor, friendly staff, and a close proximity to the beach, and some of the best scenic views in San Diego, the Template is a must-visit if you’re in the Ocean Beach area.

They offer a small selection of pastries like danishes and croissants, so you can grab a small bite to refuel, but don’t count on eating breakfast or lunch here. It’s relatively quiet inside, and there are always others working here.

What to order at Ultreya: Iced Dirty Chai and Mount Laguna Bagel Sandwich

Ultreya Coffee Roasters San Diego

Originally operating in the College Area of northeast San Diego, Ultreya Coffee and Tea recently opened its second location in the Ocean Beach neighborhood. This local coffee shop also roasts their own beans, and it’s woman-owned and operated.

Their coffee, matcha, and chai are all delicious, and you can order a filling bagel sandwich here. This is a great place to stop before heading to the beach for the morning or afternoon.

7. Spill the Beans Coffee and Bagels

Gaslamp Quarter (five total locations) → Directions

What to order at Spill the Beans: Iced Blondie Mocha and San Diego Breakfast Sando

Spill the Beans Coffee Shop San Diego

Get roasted and toasted at Spill the Beans! Serving up great coffee and fresh bagels, this Gaslamp Quarter establishment is a must-visit for coffee lovers when exploring downtown San Diego.

There are five Spill the Beans locations, all within San Diego. While they’re all great, I recommend the one in the Gaslamp Quarter.

There is just bar-style seating here, so I don’t recommend coming here to study or work. You can easily find a chair during slower times of day, but it’s located right next to a sports bar, so it gets loud.

8. Hinar Dessert Bar & Cafe

East Village → Directions

What to order at Hinar: Orange Blossom Latte and assorted desserts

Hinar Dessert Bar & Cafe San Diego

Calling all fellow sweet tooths, this is the perfect coffee shop in San Diego for you. With a cozy, relaxed atmosphere, Hinar Dessert Bar and Cafe is a great place to grab a coffee and a sweet treat and slow down after a busy day, or rest before your next adventure in San Diego

While their drink menu is small, their coffee is amazing. And paired with a tiramisu or tres leches, it makes for the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. The decor and dishes are chic, and the space is great for working or studying. Just know there is limited seating here.

9. Michi Michi Baking Collective

Michi Michi Baking Collective San Diego

If you’re a fan of pastries, then Michi Michi Baking Collective needs to be on your radar. Relatively new and already known for their mouthwatering pastries, this neighborhood bakery is a must-visit.

You can grab an array of sweet and savory pastries and pair them with matcha and coffee for a full breakfast from Michi Michi. Make sure to arrive as early as possible for the best selection of pastries. Note that there is only outdoor seating here as it is a very small building.

10. Selva Coffee House

What to order at Selva: “Queenie” – iced strawberry matcha, or “Peep Show” – vanilla marshmallow iced coffee

Selva Coffee San Diego

Located in a plant nursery, this San Diego coffee shop is a great place to grab a yummy drink and browse all the possible future house plants. They also have a nice selection of pastries at Selva Coffee House.

Their popular drinks are often matcha, and it does not disappoint, though their espresso drinks are great too. You might get lucky and see the resident cats roaming around as well!

More of a bakery and cafe, this Hillcrest establishment is a great place to get breakfast or lunch as well as great coffee! With a French bakery vibe, this neighborhood restaurant is popular for good reason.

Stay for a relaxing full meal, or get a coffee and some pastries to go to keep you fueled on your San Diego outings. You really can’t go wrong with any of their baked goods here, including the quiches. And surprisingly, they serve some of the best coffee in San Diego!
