Fall Weather in Venice

Fairly similar to spring in Venice, fall temperatures are generally around the low 50s to high 60s, low 70s (°F) from September through November. There will likely be rainy days, though not quite as many as springtime.

Knowing what to wear so you stay dry and warm will keep you comfortable and hopefully make your trip the best possible. Layering will be key, and having a waterproof jacket is essential.

  • September: 75° / 58° | 5 days of rain
  • October: 65° / 51° | 6 days of rain
  • November: 54° / 41° | 6 days of rain

Clothing for Fall in Venice

Here is an idea of what clothes to pack for fall in Venice so you stay dry and warm. If you can do that, you can comfortably keep exploring the city regardless of weather!

Tops

A mix of casual and dressy, short-sleeve and long-sleeve tops is best. You can then easily layer on cooler days or wear just a shirt on warmer days.

Tank top:

Even in the fall, I like to pack a tank top, specifically to layer under other tops, or to double as a sleep shirt. This can just be a basic cami or neutral tank top from your closet.

Short-sleeve shirt:

As the temperature can reach the 70s sometimes in the fall, pack a couple of short-sleeve shirts. You can wear them alone on warmer fall days in Venice, or you can layer them either over a tank top or under a jacket or cardigan on cooler days.

Long-sleeve shirt:

Pack at least two warmer shirts, especially if you’re visiting Venice in late fall, around November. As it can reach the 40s, this time of year in Venice can get very chilly. A long-sleeve shirt will be great for layering on rainy days, or wear it alone if you catch the sun.

Lightweight sweater:

If you’re visiting in late fall, around late October through November, I’d bring a sweater as well. Stick with a lighter-weight sweater; you can dress warmer by wearing a shirt underneath it, or wear a fleece-lined rain jacket over a sweater to stay really cozy.

Need a recommendation? Take a peek at my favorite lightweight sweater, and for layering, I love this cotton short-sleeve shirt.

Bottoms

Long pants are the best option for fall in Venice. However, if you’re a big skirt or dress lover, you can still wear them, just pack a pair of tights to wear underneath. These fleece-lined tights are great; they look really nice, but are super warm.

Casual long pants:

Pack a couple of casual pants that you can wear every day. Long pants are best for fall in Venice; think jeans, canvas pants, or even joggers. My go-to everyday pants are these wide-leg jeans

Dressy long pants:

Pack a pair or two of dressier pants, but make sure they’re still comfortable. These can be chinos or dress pants, etc. Italians tend to dress up daily, and in Venice, you’ll likely see a lot of posher outfits. A pair or two of nicer pants will go far in Italy in the fall.

Need a recommendation? Here are some great casual, everyday jeans, and a super comfortable yet chic pair of dressier pants.

Shoes

You want to avoid blisters and pick shoes that will still be comfortable to wear after 10k+ steps a day. There is a lot of walking to do in Venice, so make sure you have the right shoes for this trip.

Tennis shoes:

Comfortable shoes are essential for Italy. There are no cars in Venice, only a few water taxis, so you will likely be walking a lot when you’re here. Pack a pair of super comfortable shoes to keep your toes happy, even ater 20k steps a day. You can opt for a pair of sneakers too, if you know they are good for walking long distances.

Ankle boots:

As Venice tends to be rainy, somewhat so in the fall, a pair of waterproof or water resistant chelsea boots can be a great option. These can be Blundstone-style boots, rain boots, etc. These will be warmer than tennis shoes, which will be really nice on rainy days and towards the end of fall.

Looking for shoe recommendations? My go-to tennis shoe/sneaker for any travel, literally always have a pair, is my Allbirds tree runner shoes. If you’re in the market for ankle boots, these black waterproof Chelsea boots are fantastic.

Layers / Accessories

Lined rain jacket:

A waterproof outer layer is a must-have for fall in Venice, but as it can get quite cold, I recommend investing in a fleece-lined rain jacket that will keep you dry and warm. You can avoid having to pack multiple jackets if you have one multi-use jacket!

Cardigan:

I never travel without a cardigan, no matter what time of year it is. But as Venice can run cool in the fall, a cardigan is a useful extra layer to have with you. You can layer it over a shirt, under a jacket on colder days, or even wear it as a top if it buttons up.

Looking for shoe recommendations? I love this button-up sweater cardigan to layer or wear as a warmer top. For a warm, waterproof outer layer, this fleece-lined rain jacket is amazing.

Socks + undergarments:

Remember to pack any undergarments you need, like socks, bras, and underwear. I recommend packing a couple of warmer pairs of long socks if you’re visiting in November when it gets colder.

Other Essentials for Fall in Venice

Day Bag

Having a day bag, like a small backpack or sling bag, that easily allows you to carry a few essentials will make any trip better. A hands-free bag is best, so avoid a purse that’s not crossbody.

Water bottle:

I recommend always having a water bottle with you when you’ll be out exploring for most of the day. There are fresh water taps all around Venice, so bring a reusable water bottle you can refill as needed. You could easily spend a small fortune on single-use water bottles when walking so much in Italy.

Umbrella:

As it does rain some in Venice in the fall, pack a compact umbrella to help you stay dry. Keep it packed away in your day bag when you don’t need it, but have it conveniently ready when it does rain. This will allow you to keep exploring regardless of weather.

Portable charger:

You’ll likely need your phone for directions, translating, photos, etc. Avoid your phone dying by bringing a portable charger with you in your day bag. This can be nice to have on travel days, too.

Toiletries

  • Toothbrush + toothpaste
  • Hairbrush + hairties
  • Cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen
  • Eye ream
  • Razor
  • Period products
  • Lipbalm
  • Lotion
  • Deodorant
  • Perfume (optional)
  • Shampoo + conditioner (bars or travel bottles)
  • Ibuprofen
  • Medications (if needed)
  • Contacts (if needed)

Pack all your toiletries in a convenient toiletry travel bag, and keep any liquids in a waterproof bag like a Ziploc or a reusable quart bag. If you’re traveling with a carry-on only, make sure you keep any liquids below 3 oz each. You know what you use daily, above are just my essentials and recommendations.

Electronics

  • Chargers
  • RFID blocking sleeves (for credit cards and passports)
  • Portable charger
  • Kindle (optional)
  • Camera + mini tripod
  • Electronics organizer
  • Headphones

Remember to pack any chargers for the electronics you bring. RFID blocking sleeves are essential for international travel as they help protect your credit cards and passports from electronic theft. A love having my Kindle for travel days (for reading on plane rides), and I always travel with a camera and mini tripod.

You can organize your cords, chargers, etc., in a travel electronics case that will fit in your carry-on bag. A pair of Bluetooth headphones is essential for any travel day if you ask me!
