It’s no secret that Venice is a rainy city, especially so in the spring, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the historic beauty of this city. With the proper packing list, you will be prepared for your stay in Venice and be comfortable when exploring the canals and monuments, no matter the weather.
Knowing what to pack for Venice in spring will help you make the most of your time in this seafront city. Even though it’s the rainiest time of year, it can still be a great time to visit.

Weather in Venice in Spring

While Venice is typically rainy year-round, springtime is especially so. You’ll likely experience cooler temperatures and possibly showers if you visit Italy in the spring. Having the right clothes to help you stay dry and comfortable is essential to enjoying your trip.
Clothing to Pack for Spring in Venice
The right clothes will help keep you comfortable and dry while exploring Venice in March, April, and May. Don’t let a drizzle hinder your time in one of the most beautiful cities in Italy!
Tops
Short sleeve shirts x 3
Long sleeve
Tank top
A mix of tops is best for visiting Venice in the spring. With the rain comes chillier temperatures, so being able to add layers depending on the weather is convenient. Pack a tank top for your first layer, as well as a few short-sleeve shirts, a long-sleeve shirt, and a sweater if you’re going in early spring, around March, and even into April.
Bottoms
- Casual long pants
- Dressy long pants
Spring in Venice is still fairly cool, so long pants are the best option. I recommend a pair of more casual pants, like jeans or joggers, and a pair of nicer pants you can easily dress up for a fancy evening out in one of Venice’s best restaurants (there are too many to count).
You can also pack a skirt or a dress if that’s your style, but you’ll definitely want a pair of fleece-lined tights in case it is super chilly or rainy.

Layers
Lined rain jacket
Cardigan
Tights
Remember that layering is your best bet in the spring in Venice, and anywhere during the colder months, for that matter. For Venice specifically, I recommend a lined rain jacket that will keep you dry AND warm. This way you won’t need to pack two different jackets and worry that you brought along the wrong one.
A cardigan is also very useful as a lighter outer layer if the sun comes out, or you can layer it over your shirt and under your lined rain jacket. And remember fleece-lined tights if you plan on bringing a skirt or dress!
Shoes
- Tennis shoes
- Sneakers
- Ankle boots
There’s a lot of walking to do in Venice as there are no roads, therefore no buses or taxis. There are water taxis, but these generally only take you around the islands and not through them. Venice is also stunning, so you will want to explore as much as you can, so comfortable shoes are necessary.
Pack a pair of tennis shoes or sneakers that have rubber soles and are somewhat water-resistant, if possible. A pair of waterproof ankle boots will be very useful, but they will take up more space in your luggage, so you’ll likely have to wear them on travel days if you opt to bring them.

Remember to pack any necessary toiletries and liquids in containers of 3 oz or smaller.
