How to Get From Naples to the Amalfi Coast

There are a couple of ways to get from Naples to Amalfi without a car. While you can rent a car or hire a private driver, the following options will be much cheaper and still convenient.

Ferry in port in Amalfi, Italy - Naples to Amalfi Coast

Cheapest Option

Is there a train from Naples to Amalfi? Not directly, but you can take the train from Naples to Salerno and catch a quick ferry ride from Salerno to Amalfi, Amalfi Coast. Here’s how to get from Naples airport to Amalfi Coast, Italy.

1. Bus from Naples Capodichino Airport Terminal Bus Stop to Naples Piazza Garibaldi Central Station (Napoli Centrale)

2. Train from Napoli Centrale to Salerno

3. Ferry from Salerno to Amalfi

Step 1 | Train from Naples to Salerno

If you are traveling from the Naples Airport to Amalfi, then hop on the bus right by the airport at the Naples Capodichino Airport Terminal Bus stop and head to Naples Piazza Garibaldi Central Station. This is about a 15-minute bus ride, and it should be a direct route with no stops.

You will then be right next to Napoli Centrale, the main train station in Naples. This is where you will catch most trains from Naples, and where most trains will arrive in the city.

From Napoli Centrale, hop on the train to Salerno. This is a 40 to 80-minute train ride depending on how many stops your train is making. If you purchase tickets ahead of time, which we highly recommend doing, then you can buy tickets online for both the bus and the train (from the Airport to Napoli Centrale and the train to Salerno).

Step 2 | Ferry from Salerno to Amalfi

Once you arrive in Salerno, you will head to the harbor, which is about a 5-minute walk, or you can catch a cab if you have lots of luggage. Make your way over to the Travelmar Kiosk and ask for tickets for the next ferry to Amalfi.

This ferry ride is about 30 minutes long, and the tickets cost about €7 one way. The ferries leave about every 40 minutes, so you might have to wait for a little. However, there is a cute cafe on the dock with plenty of food and drinks to choose from so you can grab a snack or lunch while you wait!

Pro Tip: Use Ferryhopper to find the best tickets and fastest routes by ferry.

Step 3 | Arrive in Amalfi

Your ferry will take you right to Amalfi and you will get off at the main port where all the ferries arrive and depart from. The total trip, from Naples to Amalfi, takes approximately 1.5 hours.

If you plan on staying on the Amalfi Coast, Amalfi itself is a great hub to explore the rest of this region. There are tons of ferries and buses leaving all day to surrounding cities and islands so you can easily do more exploring.
